Teaching a Cross-Curricular ESL Unit on Any Type of Food or Dish

I was thinking of teaching a cross-curricular ESL unit on any type of food or dish, which would help my students brush up on not only their English grammar and vocabulary but their ICT skills as well. After doing some Internet research on ESL-based cross-curricular activities besides referring to some upper primary school ICT textbooks, I came up with some ideas worth sharing here. Here are some examples that you can use in a typical ESL curriculum when giving your students a cross-curricular assignment.

Assignment Instructions:

1. Create a slideshow consisting of 5-10 slides (excluding the title slide and the end slide) about any type of food or any type of dish.

2. Make sure one of the slides has 5 quiz questions.

3. Make sure there is another slide that shows the answers to all the 5 quiz questions.

4. Make sure all the above-mentioned questions and answers are written in full sentences.

5. Do not forget to write your name, class name, and date on the title slide.

6. Email your slideshow to zulhashim@gmail.com by 31 October 2021.

Students should be given some examples of acceptable questions and answers for the quiz slides so that they will be on the right track. Here are three example questions and their respective correct answers. They are all in complete sentences.

Example Question (1): 

What is a male pizza maker called?

Example Answer (1): 

A male pizza maker is called a pizzaiolo.




Example Question (2): 

What is another word for ‘eggplant’?

Example Answer (2): 

Another word for ‘eggplant’ is ‘aubergine’.




Example Question (3): 

Which continent does 90% of the world’s rice come from?

Example Answer (3): 

90% of the world’s rice comes from Asia.
